How to Write a Letter of Consent

A letter of consent is written to allow the person to do something on your behalf. It is a letter that gives the authority and the power to the holder of the letter. It is often referred to as ‘Letter of Permission’ too.

When a letter as such is going to give an authority to the person to do the job for you, it has to be written with extra care and attention. Words must be chosen carefully to make this letter impactful and devoid of any ambiguity, so that your interests are protected and your work is made easier.

Whom

Once you’ve figured out the reason, you should know whom are you writing it for. For instance, If you are writing the letter to a travel company, to allow your minor child to travel to another place to see a relative, you can address it with, ‘To (full name)’. However, if it is a staff at the bank, beginning with ‘To The Manager’ will be preferred.

However, if you are not sure about whom to address the letter to, then ‘to whomsoever it may concern’ is also fine. Getting the address right, will help in sending the letter to the specified recipient.

Writing this type of letter is no different from writing a regular one. Apart from the content, the style and the design remain the same. As this is a formal letter, explain your reasons in the simplest language possible. Avoid mindless ramblings of any sorts and stick to the point while writing this kind of a letter.

After opening the letter with address on the left, write a subject line of no more than ten words. This one line has to express the reason for writing the letter. This line will be followed by, ‘Respected Sir/Madam’ and then begin with an opening paragraph that greets the reader.

The body of the letter, will mention the reason for writing the letter. The paragraph, will be your concluding paragraph. The concluding paragraph, must express gratitude. At the end of the letter, sign and write the date.

A letter of consent gives the authority and the right to the other person, provided it is signed by a witness other than the person you are giving the permission to. These have to be notarized in a few cases. Thus, get them done in advance in so that they are validated. Also, such formal letters have to be written clearly, for its absolute effectiveness.
