How to choose a topic for an essay?

Choosing the topic of an essay can be a long time to stall your process of writing it, because you just do not know what you will write. Apart from the case when your teacher formulates the exact subject of the essay, the choice of the topic can be reduced to narrowing the direction given by the teacher, choosing from the proposed list of topics or to “free swimming”.
The refinement options of the theme
* Narrowing the specified direction
The first of these cases implies that you have been given some General direction. For example, to write an essay on the culture of Yekaterinburg. Such a topic is too broad and requires narrowing it down to a single question. For example, having visited this glorious city, you made a trip along the “red line” and now have the idea of opening such a tourist route in your city. Then you can formulate the theme, for example, as follows: “Creation in Kostroma “red line”. In this case, your work itself can be devoted to what objects of the city can be included in this route, or what benefits the city will receive after the creation of the “red line”.
Pay attention to who you are writing the essay for. Ordinary work for the delivery of the teacher at the University will be significantly different from the essay submitted for admission to an educational institution, a literary circle or when applying for a job. What does the person who will read your essay expect from you? Manifestations of originality, ability to competently and beautifully reason, professional qualities or something else?
* Select from a list of topics
This option is simpler than the previous one, but requires analysis of what you understand best or would like to understand. Choosing a topic from this list of teachers, evaluate what knowledge and experience you already have on a particular topic. What is the author’s position you could Express on the selected topic?
* No topic
The third case is the complete absence of any topic. This option is the most difficult in terms of choice, but literally opens the door to the world, allowing you to write about what you want. In order not to drown in this ocean of opportunities, first determine what you are most interested in. What do you think about most often? What attracts your attention to such an extent that you forget about everything else? What would you like to improve in society, your city, surrounding objects?
Once you have decided on the direction, find out what you like the most. Some people like to describe some events, places, interesting people, amazing things, others like to analyze, the third-to write about themselves, and the fourth will prefer to criticize what they do not like. Depending on this, your essay will be descriptive, analytical, reflective, critical, or otherwise.
Combining an interesting topic for you with an essay, sketch out several options for topics. At this stage, what is important is not the exact wording of the topic, but the understanding of the problem and the potential of its solution.
Evaluate selected topics
After selecting specific topics, evaluate each of them for how much content you can reveal it. Do you have any interesting observations and ideas on this topic, can you surprise the reader with something, do you feel inspiration when discussing this topic? You should understand that in the course of your work you will have to formulate a certain thesis and then prove it. Will you be able to do it for the selected topics? What are your trump cards?
When studying the potential of a particular topic, pay attention to the availability of literature. In some cases, it is more logical to first try to find the necessary information in the sources, and then proceed to the design of thoughts in the form of an essay. For example, for the topic of creating a “red line” in the city, it may be necessary to analyze the state of this problem today. Find out if you’re late with your idea. Maybe someone has already managed to inspire others to implement it and is currently holding a “Red line” right under your window? What attractions in your city deserve to be included in the tourist route? How much money will it take to create such a line?
If the teacher demanded coordination of the topic with him, be sure to show him the work plan, the main thesis of the essay and the arguments for its confirmation.
